TSC Halts Permanent Teacher Hiring to Absorb 20,000 Interns First

The Teachers Service Commission confirmed in mid-2026 that it will not open any recruitment round for permanent-and-pensionable teaching positions during the 2026/27 financial year, prioritising instead the absorption of 20,000 intern teachers whose two-year contracts expire in January 2027. The announcement came alongside a warning about a fraudulent social media flyer falsely advertising 24,000 junior secondary school internship vacancies.

Confirmation Plan and Fake Advert Warning

TSC's stated position is that confirming the current cohort of 20,000 intern teachers into permanent employment must precede any new permanent recruitment round. Simultaneously, TSC announced a new intern recruitment round to begin in November 2026, targeting 16,000 new intern teachers and 5,000 replacement teachers. Applications are to be submitted through the TSC online portal at tsc.go.ke. The Commission warned the public not to respond to a social media flyer claiming 24,000 junior secondary internship posts were available — confirmed as fraudulent.

What Comes Next

November 2026 is the next milestone date for teacher graduates monitoring the TSC hiring calendar. The Commission is expected to publish the subject areas and regional distribution of the 16,000 intern vacancies on tsc.go.ke in advance.
