TSC opens 54,016 teacher slots: 34,016 promotions and 20,000 junior-school posts

Key points

  • TSC: 54,016 total vacancies — 34,016 promotions and 20,000 permanent junior-school teaching posts.
  • Promotion applications online to midnight 10 August 2026; JSS posts open 18 August, close 31 August 2026.
  • Largest promotion band cited: 13,490 Senior Teacher II; also 5,956 Senior Master IV and 4,210 Senior Teacher I.
  • Budget frame: Sh2bn earmarked to promote ~30,000 teachers; Muturi cites 274,285 promotions over three years.

Fifty-four thousand and sixteen is the headline number: the Teachers Service Commission has split a mega advert into 34,016 promotion routes and 20,000 permanent-and-pensionable junior-school teaching posts aimed at Competency-Based Education delivery, Eastleigh Voice reported.

Promotion hopefuls must apply online via the TSC portal by midnight on Monday, 10 August 2026. Junior-school recruitment opens Tuesday, 18 August and closes midnight Monday, 31 August 2026. Manual forms will not be accepted; successful candidates go where vacancies exist, not where they wish.

Grade mix and the Sh2 billion promise

Among promotions, Senior Teacher II alone accounts for 13,490 slots, with Senior Master IV at 5,956 and Senior Teacher I at 4,210, plus smaller bands from Deputy Headteacher grades up to Chief Principal (54 regular schools, 7 TTCs) and curriculum support officers. The exercise sits on a Sh2 billion 2026/27 allocation TSC says should move about 30,000 teachers after years of stagnation — the commission had told Parliament 178,871 teachers were stuck in grades despite meeting criteria.

Chairman Jamleck Muturi put a three-year scoreboard at 274,285 promotions (100,067 competitive, 174,218 common cadre). Teachers will test those claims against portal dates and payslip grade changes, not anniversary speeches.

JSS rules and fraud warnings

Junior-school applicants need Kenyan citizenship, at least a diploma in education, C+ mean and C+ in two teaching subjects at KCSE (or equivalent), and TSC registration. Selection is merit-plus-county vacancy. TSC stresses the exercise is free — report anyone selling “slots.” Education desk: Education.

Unions should publish a plain checklist of Chapter Six documents and grade eligibility before the portals open. County directors must post vacancy maps so rural hardship stations are not silently stripped of applicants. Screenshot every confirmation page; when 54,016 files move, dispute resolution will depend on digital proof.
