EACC Arrests Webuye Traffic Police Officers for Roadblock Bribery

Three traffic police officers attached to Webuye Police Station in Bungoma County were arrested on July 2, 2026, by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission after a targeted surveillance operation confirmed systematic bribery and extortion at a roadblock on the Webuye-Kitale Road.

Three Officers Caught in EACC Surveillance Operation

The three officers arrested were Corporal Kipyego Metto, Police Constable Ben Kiptoo Maswai, and Police Constable Alex Kidui Makee — all members of the traffic enforcement unit at Webuye Police Station in Bungoma County. The EACC launched its surveillance operation following a wave of formal public complaints from motorists alleging systematic collection of cash bribes. Victims included public service vehicle operators and drivers of heavy commercial trucks. "The commission acted on public complaints and gathered the evidence needed to support these arrests," an EACC spokesperson confirmed.

What Comes Next

The three arrested officers face arraignment on charges related to bribery and corrupt conduct under Kenya's anti-corruption statutes. The National Police Service's Internal Affairs Unit is expected to initiate parallel disciplinary proceedings.
