Matungulu shootout: suspect killed, police AK-47 from 2025 Mavoko robbery recovered

Key points

  • DCI said a suspected gangster died in a shootout in Mashokani, Matungulu, Machakos, after a Toyota Harrier was stopped on the Koma–Kenol highway.
  • An AK-47 with 11 rounds of 7.62×39mm was recovered; detectives say it is the rifle stolen from an AP officer in Mavoko in November 2025.
  • In that earlier attack in Athi River the officer was shot in the chest and both legs; attackers took the rifle (30 rounds) and his phone.
  • A second suspect with a pistol escaped; the Harrier also yielded eight phones, four balaclavas, crowbars and torches. Body taken to Kangundo Level 4.

On the Koma–Kenol highway the stop turned into gunfire. Detectives in Mashokani, Matungulu Sub-County, Machakos, flagged a Toyota Harrier; occupants allegedly shot first and officers shot back, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said, Eastleigh Voice reported.

One suspect carrying an AK-47 was fatally wounded. Another, armed with a pistol, ran. The recovered rifle held 11 rounds of 7.62×39mm. Preliminary checks, DCI said, match it to the firearm taken from an Administration Police officer during a violent robbery in Mavoko in November 2025. In that earlier attack three armed men accosted the officer while he guarded a house in Athi River / Mlolongo, shot him in the chest and both legs, and left with the AK-47 loaded with 30 rounds plus his phone. A search of the Harrier found eight mobile phones, four balaclavas, crowbars and torches. Crime Scene Investigation processed the scene; the body went to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary for autopsy. Detectives are hunting the fleeing man and still tracing other guns stolen from officers.

One rifle back, one gunman still out

A serial-number match is the start of a file, not the end. The public still needs the dead suspect named after identification, the escaped man’s description, and whether that AK-47 was fired in any crime between November and Mashokani.

DCI should say when ballistic confirmation will be published. IPOA should review the shootout file as it would any fatal police contact.

Residents along Koma–Kenol should treat the wanted pistol suspect as live and use official lines, not forwarded photos.

Based on Eastleigh Voice reporting of the DCI statement. The deceased is a suspect; the second man has not been caught.
