Fifty million tonnes is the freight milestone Afristar put on the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway as of 26 July — specifically 50.015 million tonnes — with passenger counts at 18.606 million since opening day 31 May 2017, Eastleigh Voice reported via Xinhua.
The operator also claims more than 3,300 consecutive safe operating days on the 472 km line, sold as Kenya's first modern railway since independence and a Belt and Road flagship of China-Kenya cooperation. Freight services that began in 2018 have widened from containers into grain, fertiliser, steel, cement clinker, farm produce and cold-chain cargo.
What the milestone does — and does not — prove
Throughput is a logistics win for the port-capital corridor. It does not by itself settle debt-service debates, last-mile truck competition or Naivasha-west extension politics. Efficiency claims need published average transit times and price comparisons against pure road haulage.
Afristar says it will keep partnering Kenya Railways to lift capacity and quality — language every operator uses until the next capacity crunch at peak tea or fertiliser season.

Shippers' associations can publish their own cost surveys so the 50 million tonnes celebration is matched by customer experience data. A railway that only celebrates tonnage while yards clog will not keep regional cargo loyalty.
The 50.015 million tonne mark and 18.606 million passengers are operator claims dated to late July 2026; independent verification by Kenya Railways or the transport ministry would strengthen the celebration. Shippers care less about BRI branding than about predictable wagon supply next season.
Cold-chain and fertiliser shares of the mix should be broken out in the next Afristar note so agricultural counties can judge whether the railway is more than a container story for port importers.
