Kenya Eyes UNICEF Child Nutrition Fund to Fight Child Stunting

Kenya is in high-level talks to access a dedicated global financing mechanism designed to tackle chronic childhood malnutrition, following a significant meeting in Nairobi in June 2026. Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni met UNICEF Deputy Representative Mahboob Bajwa to explore how Kenya can tap into the Child Nutrition Fund — as more than one in four Kenyan children under five remains stunted.

Kenya and UNICEF Explore Child Nutrition Fund Access

Government data show that more than 25% of children under five are stunted. An additional 11% are classified as underweight, while between 4% and 5% suffer acute wasting. The June 2026 meeting centred on the Child Nutrition Fund, a multilateral financing mechanism coordinated by UNICEF that pools donor contributions to scale up high-impact nutrition interventions. Muthoni signalled the government's firm commitment to addressing the nutrition crisis and expressed interest in fast-tracking Kenya's formal engagement with the CNF.

What Comes Next

Following the June talks, the Ministry of Health is expected to formalise Kenya's expression of interest with the CNF secretariat and prepare a country-level nutrition investment case detailing the financing gap, priority counties, and intervention packages.
