“It is time for Members of Parliament to consider using part of their NG-CDF funds to partner with NTSA and provide helmets for riders and pillion passengers,” Transport committee chair George Kariuki said after assessing NTSA digitisation, KBC reported.
MPs say boda boda crashes keep killing despite past interventions and want constituency funds to buy helmets, expand education and pull NTSA services closer to the public. Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama lamented that some Kenyans travel hundreds of kilometres for basic NTSA services while paying the same taxes as others.
Seventeen counties is not a national footprint
Director General Eng. Nashon Kondiwa acknowledged a road safety crisis and inadequate funding. “Currently, we are in 17 out of 47 counties, which is way below our target,” he said, outlining a push to expand coverage. Helmets without county offices still leave licensing and education gaps; offices without helmet programmes leave the deadliest mode under-equipped.
