KDF Dominate as Kenya Picks Glasgow Team at Nyayo Trials

Kenya's premier domestic athletics competition, the National Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games Selection Trials, lit up Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi from June 18 to 20, 2026, as athletes across all track and field disciplines vied for places on the Glasgow-bound national squad.

KDF's Commanding Haul

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) emerged as the dominant team of the championships, amassing an impressive 59 medals — 21 gold, 23 silver and 15 bronze — to claim the overall team title ahead of rivals Kenya Police, Kenya Prisons and Athletics Kenya-affiliated club athletes.

Odira Claims Third Successive National Crown

World 800m champion Lilian Odira produced the championships' most celebrated individual performance, winning the women's 800m in a commanding 2 minutes 0.44 seconds to claim her third consecutive national title.

Sprint Stars Seal Their Places

Ferdinand Omanyala won his event convincingly, reinforcing his undisputed position at the head of Kenya's sprint programme. Wycliffe Kinyamal also triumphed in his respective event. Sixty-three athletes were initially shortlisted for the trials, ensuring genuine competition for every available place in the final 52-strong squad.
