The National Multi-Stakeholder Convening on Political Goonism and Hired Violence was organised by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya with the Centre for Human Rights and Policy Studies (CHRIPS). National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said tackling goonism needs more than police work and that communities must help prevent violence. “The area of goonism is not entirely a police matter, but also a societal problem. We have continued mapping of goons and identified areas where we have moderate, high, and very high situations when it comes to goons ahead of the 2027 General Elections,” he said.
ICJ’s 2007 memory and the demand for tangible results
ICJ chairperson Christine Alai said citizens feel exposed and want duty bearers to show tangible results, not only meetings. She linked present patterns — criminal gangs and, in some cases, ethnic militia forms such as Mungiki — to the trends that preceded the 2007/2008 post-election violence. The convening’s shared ask was preventive policing, stronger intelligence gathering and early-warning systems before hired violence scales with campaigns.
