Samsung opens Kenya online brand store as electronics go direct-to-consumer

Key points

  • Samsung launched a Kenya online brand store this week in partnership with local retailer Housewives Paradise.
  • Store sells smartphones, televisions and home appliances with nationwide delivery, WhatsApp support and delivery tracking.
  • Platform adds online-exclusive products, curated bundles and Samsung-certified installation/support for appliances.
  • Context: mobile-first shopping, digital payments and a PwC projection of ~16% CAGR for Kenya’s internet advertising market through 2029.

Kenyan electronics buyers increasingly decide what to buy on a phone screen long before they enter a showroom — and manufacturers want that screen to be theirs. Samsung is the latest major brand to push a direct digital channel in Kenya, The Standard reported from the launch of a Samsung Brand Store in partnership with local retailer Housewives Paradise.

The electronics market is shifting further online as manufacturers and retailers expand digital sales, giving consumers more ways to research, compare and purchase. The change sits inside a wider e-commerce transformation driven by mobile phones, digital payments and social platforms. Kenya’s internet advertising market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of about 16 per cent through 2029, according to PwC, a proxy for rising digital consumer activity. Shoppers increasingly use mobile apps, WhatsApp and social media to discover products and talk to sellers; for electronics, specification sheets, prices and reviews often settle the decision before a physical visit.

What the brand store claims to control

Direct platforms let manufacturers own more of the journey — discovery, payment, delivery, support and after-sales — rather than handing the whole path to multi-brand retailers. At the launch, Francis Modi, e-commerce manager at Samsung Electronics East Africa, said the step would change how Samsung connects with and delivers value to consumers across Kenya. The online store lets customers browse and buy smartphones, televisions and home appliances, with nationwide delivery, WhatsApp support and delivery tracking. It also introduces online-exclusive products, curated bundles and Samsung-certified installation and support services for home appliances, tools meant to differentiate the direct channel from conventional retail shelves.

For competing brands and independent shops, the risk is channel conflict: price transparency online can pressure street margins even as it grows volume. For buyers outside Nairobi, the practical tests are delivery reliability, warranty handling and whether WhatsApp support answers faster than a mall desk. Business desk: Business. Whether direct-to-consumer becomes the main electronics path or remains a premium side-door will show up in delivery density and return rates, not in launch-day rhetoric alone.
