Judges liked KPA across viable transport, export/trade strategy, environment, blue economy, theme interpretation, ICT, community work and large trade stand. Silver places came in cohesion, youth and statutory-board lanes. The stand itself mixed Mombasa and Lamu messaging with inland depots and Lake Victoria pier assets.
Throughput, not only trophies
Port of Kisumu counts 144 vessel calls year-to-date, per KPA — a demand signal on the lake corridor. Uganda still dominates transit, mainly petroleum, ceramic tiles and mixed general cargo. Machinery consignments for Tanzania projects also used the gateway, widening the client map beyond Kampala fuel trucks.
June cut: 21 calls and 42,359 metric tonnes of export cargo (fuel products, tiles, hot-rolled coil, fertiliser, heavy kit), 2,094 tonnes above May. That is a one-month delta, not a full-year verdict, but it moves in the right direction if dwell times and last-mile roads keep up.

Shippers need average turnaround hours published next to the 144-call boast. Logistics planners should fuse ICD and lake data so water gains are not lost on truck queues. Importers on the Uganda route can be surveyed each quarter on landed cost per tonne versus pure road — the only price test that matters more than show ribbons.
County trade offices should ask KPA for a public June–December forecast so 42,359 tonnes is not a one-off press line. Awards expire when the next show ends; call and tonne series do not.
